1987 XJ6 4.2 Gearbox problem!

Default 1987 XJ6 4.2 Gearbox problem!

The gearbox wont go into 1, 2 or D.. But goes into R without a problem.. What can be the problem?

Do you mean the gearshift physically won't allow movement into 1,2, and D? If so I'd suspect a broken or binding shift cable or other problem related to the shift cable...such as the underbody bracket the holds the cable being broken.

Or do you mean the transmission operates only in reverse...but won't move the car forward in 1,2, or D ? If that's the case I'd suspect low fluid and/or loose bands.

The transmission operates only in reverse... Won't move the car forward in 1,2, or D.. The tranny has been drained for oil and refilled.. So low oil isn't the problem..

Well, they don't last forever.

But....adjusting the bands will sometimes bring 'em back to life. If you wanna DIY I can provide info. It's isn't very hard to do....and it's free.

Well, that would be worth a shot.. Would be alot faster (read; cheaper) if it just needed some Band adjusting.. Well, beam me up Scottie
