Default 1987 XJ6 Tune-Up parts

The family XJ6 has finally been handed down to me. This car has served us well over the years. Now with 120K it's had its share of problems but still looks great and runs well. In particular the driveline has no issues. Just the engine has some trouble with rough running, oil and exhaust leaks etc. which make it hard to pass the emissions test.

I wanted to start with a thorough tune up of the engine but before I get into it I have been told that some of the critical parts that often need replacement at this age and mileage are not available. Things like emissions parts, vacuum and timing components etc.

The car is so clean I would like to someday register it as a collector car but I need to keep everything original if I can. I wonder if anyone could tell me what hard to find tune-up/timing/emissions parts I should start to look for? I want to have spares ready so I can keep it going under smooth Coventry power!

Thanks,

RGW

Just to clarify, this is a Ser III Xj6 with a 4.2 six cylinder? If so, you'll find that the parts support is very good. I can't think of any hard-to-find ignition, fuel injection, or emission control parts. Everything I've ever needed has been a phone call, or visit to Ebay, away.

Cheers

Default Yes, Series III, 4.2

I was thinking about the seldom replaced parts like distributor, vacuum components, fuel injection etc. The kinds of things you might have to replace to pass the smog test etc.

Are all these parts still available new or is it a matter of stocking up on good used parts from EBay?

Not just eBay, there are many UK suppliers who can supply new and rebuilt parts like distributors, and even fuel injectors. US cars had a load of extra stuff on them to keep California happy which I don't know much about.

Try these: -

No worries. There are more good new/used/rebuilt Jag parts suppliers than you can shake a stick at, and most of the stuff is more reasonably priced than you might imagine....mechanical stuff, at least. Trim/body/apperance items can get expensive.

The only mechanical parts that might be getting scarce are internal transmission parts for the old Borg Warner transmission.
