Default 1989 XJ6 - Heater fan working sporadically

Hello:

My name is Chris, and I just picked up a 1989 XJ6 base model. So far, I have cleaned it up, mounted and balanced new tires, installed new front pads and rotors, and chased down a PS leak. I also will have to sort the horrible electronic dash in the future.

But now the heater fan only works when it wants to! I can hear a click when I turn the main fan control knob, but no fan. Yet sometimes it will kick on.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much.

Chris:

Although your car is badged as an XJ6, it is more commonly known by its factory code: XJ40. So that is the forum list you want. This list is for the earlier generations of the XJ, and yours is entirely different, different in evert detail, including electrical items.
But the very first place to start looking is the fuse for the fans (look in the owner's manual for the location of the pertinent fuse box). And that holds even if the fan function is intermittent. The fan switch might be the second suspect.

Hi Chris
From your description of the car and its "electronic dash", you would seem to have the XJ6 that came out in the UK in 1986, and is known as the XJ40, You'll get a lot better response if you post in the XJ40 forum. Your "click" when you try to turn on the heater fan would seem to be the relay, so it sounds as if the fan is getting worn out, normally the brushes on the motor.

the XJ40 Is a digital electronics Jaguar as opposed to the analog electronics Jaguar up to 1987.

what I have read is that the climate system in the XJ40 is controlled by a circuit board with digital "chips" aka "Integrated Circuits", located behind the dash and they burn up, requiring an expensive replacement board.

Hello, Jaguar had a microswitch problem that had a technical bulletin to help fix the board of this condition. That's all I remember.

Thank you.
