85 Vanden Plas Floor Mats and Attachment

85 Vanden Plas Floor Mats and Attachment
I have a 1985 Vanden Plas and the driver floor mat keeps creeping up. There are two metal plates that appear to go under the carpet and above the backing that are intended to hold it in place. There is a plastic pin or quarter turn fastener that's supposed to hold the metal plates in place. These are in rough shape and won't hold. I've searched the parts catalog, vendor catalogs and the forums and I've not found these parts listed.
Page 2K14L in the part catalog shows the mat (BAC3441) but I don't see anything that shows the fasteners. Anyone have a suggestion? I think a large, generic "christmas tree" type trim fastener may do the job, but I'd prefer to use the right part.
Also, I have the original Vanden Plas floor mats. They were a little ragged looking and dirty. I removed the foam from the middle and washed them on the gentle cycle, then partially dried them on delicate in the dryer. They came out pretty good and after a brushing with my dog brush they look much more presentable. ;-) I saw some info on the internet saying these were "natural" hides, but they clearly are not and the Vanden Plas material in my owner's packet also says they are synthetic. Anyway, I had good luck with this approach but, as always, YMMV.

hi,
all Jaguars, classic and modern, use the same principle to hold the floor carpets in place,
the floor has welded "towers" at the rear and the front of each carpet mat. (picture 1)
each tower has a hole where the "female" part of a 2-piece rubber plug is first inserted. (picture 2)
then the carpet/mat is placed in the floor.
then the "male" part of the plug, (the "button"), is inserted over the mat into the "female" part of the plug. The carpet mat is "cut" with a punch at the point which the male plug goes through. (picture 3)
Chances are the cuts in your mats are stretched or torn, so the solution is to add a large
plastic, thin washer under the "male" plug for more grabbing power. (picture 4).
the 2-part plugs are still available. You can pull them from salvage yard cars or order new ones from the UK. (picture 2)

Just a tidbit that others might want to know. That second picture says lakewell.com. Awesome place to get upholstery, for the people here in the states, you can't get this quality in the states. real hides are unheard of here for that much. Highly recommend for anyone who needs upholstery for their autos.

Doug, all Jags use the same carpet / mat holdowns, the pictures I used are for a 1964 S type interior. My '65 S type has them too, identical welded floor "towers" and 2-piece buttons like in my '84 XJ-6.
amaezing: I tried to find them at SNG Barrat USA store but they do not show the buttons in either the "classic saloons" or the "XJ-6 Series". Lakewell's picture is the only one I found.
another option for carpet / mat holdown buttons is to go to any autoparts store like Autozone, Advance auto, NAPA, O'Reilly's, etc., and look for domestic car push-fasteners, although those are usually one-time use only, you can buy enough of them and keep them handy.

LnrB, if you remove the carpet mats (but not the insulation foam pads which should be "flush" with the top of the "towers"), the plugs might still be there inserted onto the "towers", then all you need are the "buttons" or the "push-on" fasteners which you can get at any autoparts store.
Remember, the wider the "head" of the button / fastener, the more area of the mat can be grabbed and held in place, that's why I added 1½" inch flat plastic washers under the buttons, it really took care of the mats sliding towards the firewall.
I also use a rubber or plastic mallet/hammer to gently smack the buttons into place over the carpet mats for a tight fit.

found another UK firm who has the carpet fasteners:
Classic Car Parts | Trim Clips, Fasteners and Fixings
see picture on this link:
Jaguar 'E' Type Carpet Sockets and Studs | Bresco Vehicle Services Limited Jaguar Kits
part number: KIT6P shown for "E type" but again, all Jaguar models use the same carpet fasteners.

Thanks for all the useful replies. It appears there some things common between all the cars, but small differences. The picture attached shows the metal plate and plastic "pin" used under the carpet but above the padding to hold the mat in place. I think I'll just use a generic "single use" style pin.
Thanks again, Ben....

Ben,
those are the original "clampings" for the foam pads under the carpet. You should have two of those on the driver's side and front passenger's side.
The black button shown in your picture goes through the carpet, then to the "tower", with the clamping between. A sandwich if you will.
these are the washers I used to expand the area held by the push-on buttons. The buttons fit flush with the recess on the washer. You can buy them in the following link:

yes. XJ cars came with velcro which doesn't really hold.
to stop mats and other flooring from sliding towards the throttle pedal, push them all back towards the horizontal floor beam, mark the holes and push a nail through all of them at the same time. Get long push-on christmas tree plugs and push them through them so it goes through into the two floor "towers".
if you don't have the welded "towers" find hardware that can be screwed to the floor to act as the holdown tower.
