86 tranny on an 87?
Will an 86 xj6 tranny fit the 87 car? Both US cars. I sourced a rebuilt unit to replace my slipping unit, just want to make sure it will fit before I go and pick it up.
Thanks!
Thanks!
In the USA the changeover was 87 to 88, Fraser. That is, the XJ40 car was introduced to the USA mid '87 as a 1988 model.
The Ser III XJ6 remained in production until April 1987 for the North American market, as a 1987 model year car.
The XJ40 used a different trans, yes...the ZFxxx (I can't remember the exact designation)

So OK then. I find this model year thing a bit confusing in my English abode.
So Tsingtao is swapping out a BW 66. I certainly had no problems with my BW 66 in 14 years ownership of a 1980 Series 3; maybe I was lucky. In fact, I think the transmission was the only thing I never had to do anything with on the car. I repaired or replaced almost everything else !

Fraser, the model year thing DOES get confusing, what with Jaguar being sold in so many markets...each having its own methods and systems.
Straying a bit, here's another example...
My XJS was built in Feb 1987 but, according to the VIN, was a "1988" model year. Jaguar Conventry and Jaguar USA obviously has their reasons for doing this...likely having to do with sales and marketing...but perhaps some regulatory advantage was gained? I dunno.
(As you probably know, Jaguars for the North American market, since around 1981 or so, have two vins: the original VIN and the North American VIN, with the latter being assigned by Jaguar and meeting North American requirements)
Meanwhile, the very same car was considered a "1987" for other markets and "1987˝" in Jaguar technical literature.

What's the proper idling speed for the s3 xj6? Mine is at 1200 idle, which I thi k is on the rougher side, tried to adjust the airflow meter but no response on idle. Is it something else?
Trending Topics
About 800-900 rpm in "P". I find about 900 works best because a/c compressor and transmission drag is usually pretty heavy on these cars.
Idle speed is adjusted at the air distribution block, not the AFM. This might help:

No response from adjusting at the distribution block usually means A) there is a vacuum leak somewhere that is larger than the adjustment can compensate for or B) the block is clogged up with crud. You can remove and clean the block. Order a new gasket first

On the TB by the linkage there is a small screw. Circled here in red. You adjust the clearance of the throttle body butterfly with this screw. Once the the clearance is set, THEN you can adjust the allen head screw.
Sorry, it is the best pic I have right now. This was when I first got the car..looks MUCH different now.
