'87 XJ6 Stereo question
My dad's '87 XJ6 has the stock stereo system which recently has had the FM go dead. The AM and tape deck work fine. Is this a common problem and is there something beyond just the stereo going bad that could be causing it? Is it possible the antenna is disconnected or something? Just curious before we replace the whole thing if there is another possible fix.
as far as I know, the '86 and '87 stereos were problematic, is yours the one with the removable face? if yes, the problem is the removable face itself and there are no replacements. I have two of those stereos if you want them, just pay the shipping and I'll mail them to you, no guarantee that they work.
if the antenna goes up and down, there is no problem with the antenna. I doubt the antenna is disconnected behind the radio, otherwise you would not receive AM either.

the only way to confirm the antenna is fully connected at the rear is to pull the unit and check it, but if you are getting AM reception....
1987 was the first year for a AJ8700 (Alpine/Jaguar 8700) radio which was different than previous types and unlike some earlier types, had a non-detachable face....as you say.
It was used until '92 or so. Good ones still come on Ebay now and again.....just make sure the seller has the unlock code ;-)
Or you might call around (or Google) to find a repair shop that is willing to work on older stuff.

And, by 1987 standards, they actually sounded pretty good! Of course nowdays we'd hardly consider 'em good enough for listening to talk radio :-)

There is a repairman for the older Alpine Stereos for Jag and Land Rover. If you search for Range Rover repairs, the forum is a study in all LRs and the radio man is on the list with a one day turnover.
