Doug is correct, and HOPEFULLY one of the moderators lurking in the background will move this for you.
I have recently had the timing cover off my 3.2 AJ16 to replace the chains etc, and there was NO seal under that plate. I believe the parts book is kinda wrong??, as the earlier cars (XJ40) had a hydraulic pump mounted in place of that plate and that is where the seal came from. I replaced the gasket on the oval plate on the right side of that triangle plate, and sealed that triangle plate with RTV.
I asked at the time at the dealer, and they assured me the AJ16 had no seal in there, and YES, it sounded odd, but it dont leak, so I dont look for reasons anymore.
