Default acess doors in trunk

When I remove the spare tire in my 87 Jag xj6, I notice what appears to be two access panels in the front of the wheel well...what are these for?? I did remove one, but there appesred to be a panel blocking it, so I didn't go further.
Thanks for any help.

Bob

Nothing. They serve no purpose.

I think they might be a throwback from an earlier variant where they might have been useful in some way. I dunno. But Jaguar sometimes would keep making this 'the old way' for....some reason or another than we can only speculate about

The panel you discovered is a big heat/sound barrier.

Cheers

Thanks. I thought they might be for changing the brake pads..I've done that in place from under the car, and I will NEVER do that again.
