My air flow meter is sticking I think. Went thru all the fuel system and tanks. getting good flow and pressure. After I stop a few times I loose pressure or power. started messing with the flapper on the air flow meter and noticed that it is a bit sticky. Im not positive this is the problem but fairly sure. Its really hard to tell but as I was messing with it as it was running it did the same thing so I'm asumming that its the problem. Any one else come accross this before?
BTW it is a 1985 XJ6 Vanden Plas.

 

Well, the AFM has two main functions:

1) An internal switch activates the fuel pump circuit when the flapper is opened. The fuel pump, of course, provides pressurized fuel to the injectors

2) The Air Flow Meter sends a signal to the ECU. The signal varies according amount/degree that the flap is opened. The ECU uses this signal to decide long low the fuel injectors should stay open.

The flapper should not feel sticky. There might be a mechanical problem inside, or perhaps the resistor track is very badly worn

In any case if fussing about with the AFM causes an engien stall it's a fair bet that you've found the problem. Do check electrical connectors first.

Used AFMs are not expensive. I just sold one on Ebay for something like $25

Thank you, I really appreciate the info. I am going to try and put some lube on it since it seams to be sticking because it feels like it's just dry and dragging but I will check the electrical connectors as well.

Fixed!!!! I put a tiny shot of PB blaster on it and it's fixed. I love this car!!!

I think the meter is still wacky. Runs great now but now it's a bit hard to start. Does this now since I messed with the meter, but have to crank it over once or twice then it will fire up as before it would just fire up right off the bat.
