Default Auto Transmission

unknown motor and transmission, finally got the motor to roar last weekend.
the auto-transmission has a bent end on the dip stick shaft at top so had to fill to over flow then drain a little to ensure was full.
can feel the car shudder backward as if to reverse when placed in R and again shudder forward without actually moving when placed into D but no other movement. Have checked that the lever on the gear box is moving to the right positions and it is.
besides the obvious (yes, the brakes are all disengaged) are there any other 'you forgot to release the magic this or that' pointers before i conclude the gear box might be bad news.?

Nope.

I would add an extra litre of fluid. It will do NO harm, and just might get some motion. The gasket on the suction casting may have shrunk, so its sucking air and not fluid.

I am assuming you did the fill etc with the engine running?????. If not, you may be 2 or 3 litres low.

filled literally until pipe was over flowing but not with engine on.
should i repeat with engine running? assume this is a hot/cold liquid thing.

That is extreme.

I would drop the dipstick tube from the pan, and reshape that top bit, then refit that tube, and put 5ltrs in it. Start the engine, check the level, and fill to the Cold mark as a starter, engine running.

If the trans has sat for an extended time, then it may require 2 or 3 extra ltrs once rotated and the pump primes all the innards.

You fired it the other day, so the pump has done that, but with a damaged filler snout, the rest is guess work at best.

yeah, was pondering the stuff like brake bands, pressure take off point, downshift or other mystery bolts/terms a novice like me might entirely miss.
the unit has been siting for some time i am told.
the pipe is very bent near the top and not sure it can be fixed, but will look at it.
still get the slight lurch into R or D but nothing else.

applied more oil and ran engine, gears seemed to lurch more. noticed the revs were very low and focused on getting them up over 10k for a time and very slowly she lurched forward and began to crawl in Drive. still very roughing getting back into Reverse but took it for a short drive around the street.
