Question Borg Warner 65 automatic transmission: shifting problem

Hello!

Last week I bought a 1976 Jag XJ6

Now I have a problem with the Borg Warner 65 automatic transmission. When I start driving, the transmission does not shift from the first gear to the second / third gear for approximately one mile. After warming up, it will shift bumpy into second and third gear. The delayed shifting behavior improves after a longer journey.

I have changed the fluid (Liqui Moly Top Tec ATF 1300: specification Ford ESW-M2C 33G) and filter two times now. I also checked the fluid level when the trans was hot.

Before the first fluid change, the gearbox made a ticking noise after I had driven 300 miles home from the dealer. The ticking noise has gone after the first fluid change.

What would be the fix?

Thanks in advance!
André

Firstly, welcome to the Forums. Please do an Intro in the New Members Area when time allows.

I will assume a carbied engine 4.2ltr S2???

Coupla thoughts from my very distant past.

1) Kickdown cable set too tight, fiddle with the 2 nut fiasco at the rear of the engine, and slacken about 3 flats at a time.

2) The little slides etc INSIDE the valve body of the transmission are jamming from crap fluid over many years. I have dismantled a few of them a very looooong time ago, and freed up the innards, and they are still running OK today, The details are lost in the fog of the grey matter, but if I can do it, it cannot be complicated.

I have put Lucas Transmission additive in 3 Jaguars and both Jeep Grand Cherokees, last Jeep transmission went 255,000 miles before retiring. If Trans fluid is full, I just suck out some of fluid from dip-stick-tube with a small plastic tube ( 5' push all the way down to bottom of pan), using $6 hand pump from Harbor Freight, then add the Lucas additive. Other products may work as well?
