Can a series II engine work in a Ser III?
Seems simple enough -- I have a line on a ser 2 engine just rebuilt for a very, very reasonable price, and I'm still waiting on WD 40 to work it's magic on the the head of my ser 3.
I'm curious if the switch out is possible -- it would be a ser 2 from about 1972, and a ser 3 from 85, so a move would involve replacing the carbs with fuel injection to start. Anything else?

Technically it should be OK with the EFI system installed.
Bear in mind that the S3 engines had larger inlet valves to compliment the EFI addition, BUT, most people rebuilding the older small valve heads put the larger inlets in.
The cam profiles I think?? are the same.
The S3 oil filter housing will be needed.
The breather snout at the head front will need to be the S3 unit.
After that I see nothing else that should trip you over.
