Changing Differential Gear Oil Summary and Tips
while i realize this topic has been addressed in bits and pieces in past threads i decided to provide a summary of the relevant steps i recently went through in changing mine.
- raise and level car with jack stands with no need to remove wheels for those of us without lifts
- remove 8 1/2" bolts and 6 1/2" bolts/nuts
- counter clockwise loosen the squared headed drain plug (i used and adjustable spanner as it should not be super tight, remove plug, drain oil, replace & tighten
- locate the filler plug on the back "wall" of the diff housing. mine had an inverted 1/2" head that i simply used my 1/2" rachet wrench to counter clockwise loosen and remove. your plug might be similar to the drain plug which of course will require a spanner
- i used napa 80/90 weight gear oil with the aid of their $7 pump head that just screws onto the oil bottle. i did not find it too bothersome to pump enough oil to fill the diff case to the bottom of the fill hole. mine took just shy of 2 quarts

- hand start and clockwise tighten the fill plug
- might as well grease the 4 fittings while you're down there
- remount the 14 nuts/bolts
- enjoy the next 30k miles of driving:}

Yes, the bottom plate or tie plate. Part Number 2 in this diagram. 14 bolts total to remove it.
