Default Chrome wheel dimensions

Can anyone help with this, please?

I can't recall if the chrome wheels fitted to the series 2 were different to the standard steel wheels in any dimension e.g rim depth, width, diameter. Do the same hub caps fit?

Could I just have a standard set chromed?

At one stage many, many years ago I had 17 chrome wheels collected up for the XJC I was restoring before some thieving git nicked it. (shows how long ago it was as they were commonplace, in good condition)

Now I've got an even rustier one which I will start restoring, I would like some chrome wheels to go on it but they are rare and expensive now!

hi,
I think Jaguar wheels from 1963 all the way to the Series 3 XJ in 1992 were always 15" diameter by 5.5" width, although some earlier models like the MK-10 / 420-G used 14" diameter wheels.

if the XJ steel wheels look like the picture below, then I suppose you could rechrome them, but then you'll need the hubcaps/wheel trims too. The Series 2 chromed wheels are still available in the US but shipping them to UK would be prohibitive.

Thanks Jose,

Is that the chrome wheel in your pic, or the steel wheel with chrome embellisher and hubcap?

Anjum, that is a picture of a Series 2 chromed wheel with center cap. Here's another one:

Have you or anyone got a pic of the standard steel wheel for comparison?

I've only seen a few and they are different than the chromed wheel design, i.e., a "flatter" type of wheel, so you can fit hubcaps. But don't take that as the last word, I could be wrong.

The wheel pictured is known as the "Chrome Turbo". Not sure if that's an official designation, but most people know it that way.

The Ser II E-types first used that style in 15x5.5 size. On the Ser I-II sedans it was 15x6. In fact all the Ser I-II-III wheels were 15x6 regardless of style.

The standard issue, black-painted steel wheel looks pretty much like any other. As used on the early Ser IIIs they were fitted with a very handsome (IMHO, of course) full wheel cover

Cheers
DD

Thanks,
I'm just trying to recall whether the rim depth was the same on the standard as the Chrome Turbo. I don't recall it being so but not sure.

I sent a set of those handsome full wheel covers to Woz down under. Polished stainless steel, incredible quality and finish, I hated to see them go, they were almost mint. Got them from a Canadian XJ. The center caps and the growler emblems were removable.

Very nice, Jose!

Been phoning round jag specialist and so far no-one can give me a definitive answer as to whether the chrome turbo are the same as the standard pressed wheels +chrome.

Found a cost for rechroming, wait for it, £360 per wheel!
Ouch!!

the chromed Series 2 wheels are not similar to basic pressed-steel wheels, (those are also known as "snow tire wheels" in Canada), so you can be assured they are not what you want. And besides, the price of chroming a snow wheel is absurd.

I remember a set of Series 2 "Turbo" wheels that someone was selling last year, if you want, I can check to see if they are still available.

Just an update. I had a look at the standard steel wheels and, to me at least, they look identical to the chrome ones dimensionally. They seem to have as deep a rim which is covered by the embellishers.
So no point buying rusty chrome wheels as it will cost as much to rechrome either.

Doug you wouldn't happen to know where I could find a set of these for my 73' XJ6 would you? Been looking all over for that chrome look and have been coming up short. Thanks.
