'85 XJ6:

I am trying to use a typical auto 12V adapter in my Jag's lighter. But it seems too long. The metal contacts on the sides only go in about half way. The adapter does fit into my other vehicles (old and new).

Any feedback appreciated.

I use my lighter socket as a power tap frequently. In fact, I've Ditched the lighter element.
I like it because, on Series 2, it's always hot, key on or not so I can charge my phone while parked..

Check relative depth of the socket compared to length of your adapter. It's possible there's a hangup on the adapter.

I plug my Garmin GPS in my Series III lighter without problems. I'd look in there for something catching or try another 12v device to se if it fits better.

 

Aye, I have tw devices that plug in to the cigar lighter with no issues Cell phone charger. And, at one time, my ToTom GPs. tom tom qut updates on me!!! oh well, nowadays I know where I am going. it was a fun thing. would ave been great if available when i worked.

Oh, almost forgot. i made a patch cord fr my VOM. it plugs in there. Real time voltsat varus loads and rpm's. knda fun.

This works perfectly and stays in. This is from the UK site but I’m sure you can find similar in US.

I did buy a USB charger socket with the aim of replacing the cigar lighter but it was too wide to be a straight replacement and I didn’t want to try to enlarge the hole in my (newly veneered) console. My intention was to modify the existing lighter cover to push fit into the USB port for when not using it so I’m still looking for one the right size to just slot in.
