Default Clang/scrape when starting

New sound: on the tail end of the crank, I sometimes get that loud clang/scrape sound, like the one you get if you crank a car that has already started...possible I’m cranking to long, but the car doesn’t always start even when the sound happens. What causes that sound?

That sounds...terrible. How do I check and is there a usual fix for it?

Thank you for the help!

my car has done it but not continuously, I just ignore it. If the starter goes, I'll remove it and get it fixed. The noise is probably the starter gear. .

The bendix is the gear end of the starter. If left unattended too long it can chew up the teeth on the flywheel. I've replaced maybe 10 starters but not on an xj6. They are usually held in with 2 bolts and an electrical connection. David at everydayxj.com will have used ones for a reasonable cost. Don't have to rush but if it persists you definitely want to get it taken care of. Starters are easy, flywheel are not.

when you hear the sound, back off the ignition switch to off inmediately, then try again.

Mine does that about once in 50 starts. Not often enough to replace starter yet.

Yeah!!!

1. Bendix is a proprietary name for a starter drive. But, the drive in the S series jaguars are not Bendix. Ford used that system from early on in to the 50's. I have xamples in my bins.

2. The drive in the Jaguars here is more complex.. And, I see /hear I as a failoure to disengage. Wear, dirt or both!

3. Driver error. For sure a possibility!! My dear departed had issues with that. her thought was that the starter be engaged for an extended time to make sure the engine was well started and would not stall!! I swapped out more than one starter because of that !! Oh, well, I had my faults. ...
