Thank you JIm. There is definitely a finishing cover / plate held in place by the two screws.

Another detail: exactly above the clock, there is a round hole. Is this a Map Light or the A/C interior temperature sensor tube?

Otherwise where is the Map Light located in the Series 2?

The hole under the shelf is the Interior temperature sensor tube, Jose. After all these decades the plastic material may be very brittle and crack when you reinsert the sensor tube. (I can tell you how I know that.)

And for the record, my shelf is held in a similar manner except the screws are hidden behind the felt liner.

Thanks Elinor! fortunately the sensor hole is not cracked. It looks like this shelf never had the finisher plate that Jim has.

I'm almost done, all assembled shiny, still need to touch up the silver edges of the clock's frame. I'm thinking chromed nail polish. Two wires needed repair in the harness and they are done. The shelf I covered with a layer of black stick-on velvet apliqué.

It is amazing, all the parts were thrown all over the place in two tubs, but I recognized them and one by one everything fell in place.

here is a possible alternative to the trip computer. A radio faceplate cover from the last XJ Series 3.

a drawer could be made out of it. or a secret compartment. It fits the trip computer cutout fine, it is 3/4" wider than the trip computer width, but same height.
