Correct air filter housing paint , XJ6 Series 1
Paint is peeling off the metal air cleaner housing on my 1973 XJ6 Series 1. Anbody know if the correct paint can be determined or obtained?
I really doubt there's a specific paint for that, that's getting very particular. Any rattle can of decent automotive paint in whatever color you want should be fine, you shouldn't need high temp or anything. Just sand it down and coat it a few times, prime it first so it doesn't peel again, or maybe see how it looks to polish up the bare metal, that could be pretty cool looking and then there isn't any painting to deal with or to worry about wear and tear on. just my thoughts, best of luck to you!
The paint is a silver with a hammered or crinkled finish of some sort. It has a very particular look in my opinion, and is something I have always noticed when looking under the hood. Maybe I can find a similar rattle can out there.
Back in the 80's we used to refinish them with Finnegans Hammerite Hammered Enamel:
Direct to Rust Metal Paint - Hammered Finish
Hammerite is a zinc phosphate based paint, applied by brush, it gives the same finish as the OE Jaguar filter housing.

The hammered finish is available and you are doing the right thing by striving to keep it original in my opinion. Hammerite Rust Cap
haha sweet! mines just plain old black, I didn't realize how cool of a finish was on yours, that would be something i would like to save too =) best of luck to you and I'm glad you found what you were looking for.

I was just checking out that link and indeed there is a rattle can for that very same paint, not as many color options, but still available in black silver and white. I may have to get some myself.
