Default Dash designs over the Series 3 lifespan

Did the dash change over the life of the Series III XJ6?

I ask, as I'm looking at some on Matthews Parts (on Ebay -- not a bad source for used British stuff in my experience) and notice that in some cases, the gauges and center 'status' display all merge in one hole, and in others there are separate holes for the two gauges. It seems that the latter is in '82 on.

The dash did indeed change over the life of the Series 3, but only once. My car was a 1980 and was essentially the same as the Series 2, but later on a different centre console was introduced to coincide with the addition of better ICE, and a trip computer. I'm not sure when the change occured but probably around 1983.

Doug will know !!!

Yeah -- that seems to match what I'm finding with a little more research. Thanks!

Additionally: does anyone know if the center armrest in the back of a VDP model approx the same dimensions as the standard?

Edit: Never mind! Its irrelevant at this time.

No it did not. The same dash was common to both the series 2 and series III cars. The only difference you would find is that the VDP in both the XJ6 and V-12 versions was a little thicker with better more figured grain then the standard in addition to the gauges being inset by about .030 below the finished surface.

The centre consul was what changed a lot throughout the different models to accomodate first a parcel shelf then a clock and switches and then finally a computor and heater controls.

Default dash info

The many series 2 dashes I've seen were the same. The tell tale lamps are diffrent between a series two and three. The series three has more lamps. The three series 3 cars I've dismanlted were all somewhat diffrent in minor ways. One had a EGR / Catalyst light one didnt. One was raw steel, not pained. I've also noticed on the series 3 the way the headlamp switch was mounted was diffrent on one. Perhaps Jaguar had multiple factories and they may have done things diffrently.

The s/2 dials were silver around the edge of each dial ; Where S/3 were black. The late S/3 soveriegn had the trip computor in the centre where the standard XJ6 S/3 still had the clock. I think from 84 onwards they had electronic speedo where earlier s/3 had cable speedos. The centre tell tale display inbetween the speedo and revcounter are slightly different from S/2 to S/3. Cheers from Ray down under

P/S The wood grain was usually darker and more bur wallnut on Daimlers and Soveriegns' and seemed to be a lighter and straighter grain on standard xjs3.
