Welcome to the forum mate.

You should stop by our new members area & introduce yourself. New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

I'm guessing you have a project car that's using the Jag IRS?

Maybe another way to look at it is, how much power have you got? The Jag diffs from that era can take quite a hammering...

It will really depend on what your entire set up consists of. Everything from engine specs, transmission type, tires, etc will change that answer.

Default diff is fine...

The diff can handle quite a bit of power...well north of 500HP is common. The limit on the Jag IRS isn't the Dana 44 derived differential. The weak part is the aluminum hub carrier. They crack under load. Mine cracked with a 400HP engine. I now have a much higher HP engine and use a hub carrier from 1996 which was redesigned and reinforced.

This one is mine that I removed from the car.

I think quite a lot.

I know of a AJ16 supercharged installed in a series 1. No problem with the diff. Cant find how much bhp the AJ16 has, but quite a lot.

icsamerica said his broke at 400HP and added power and used a modified/reinforced 96 rear. You do not say how much HP.

You need a hub carrier from a later XJ40, XJ8 or XK8. I don't know for sure how to do it because I've never done the conversion but others have. I seem to recall from my readings that it bolts up and you simply need 1/2 shaft spacer the thickness of the rotor mounting flange to get the 1/2 shaft length right when replacing the hub and upgrading to outboard brakes. The 1/2 shaft spacers are still available from SNG barret.

For my upgrade I was able to find an IRS unit from 1996 XJS convertible which had other attributes I needed. Like a finned diff cover, 3.54:1 ratio, outboard vented disc brakes, low bias powerlok and the updated and reinforced hubs.
