Default Distributor timing help

The factory workshop and Haynes manuals both state that 8 degrees BTDC needs to be set with the distributor rotor facing the cylinder 6 position. Does that sound right to anyone else? I’ve done a forum search and haven’t found anything definitive regarding this. Thanks!

Memory?????

As fitted, before fiddling with, the rotor did point in the general direction of #6 cyl, at TDC #1 compression stroke.

#6 is the front cylinder on these.

Since the distributor is an offset tang drive, pretty straight forward.

Note that the timing setting varies by model year. If you can find a sticker under the hood somewhere with the settings, that is the best. Otherwise make sure you find the correct year specific settings for you engine.
