Default Donor car....what should I grab

I had a ball helping out a few Forum members when I found 2 XK8'S in a junkyard and grabbed some parts at incredibly low prices.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/two-xk8s-junkyard-near-me-291504/page4/

Well.....a somewhat close neighbor has an 85 XJ6 his wife is demanding he gets rid of. He drove by and saw mine in the driveway and asked if I needed any parts.

So....are there any unobtanium parts I should grab? What would be good to have as back up? Any electronics, pulleys, glass, lenses, interior stuff....wood trim?

And are there any items on the 85 that won't match my 87...like fuel switch over, valves etc.

As far as trim/cosmetic pieces, anything that's better than you already have.

Relays and switchgear are easy to grab, don't take up any storage space to speak of, and are worth having. Bulb failure units. Power antenna, if it still works. Climate control amp....although the chances of it being good are probably only 50-50. Pillar lamp lenses if not broken.

Air flow meter and ECU

Go wild if he's willing to let stuff go cheap

I can't think of anything, offhand, that isn't interchangeable

The dash, if in good shape, will fit your '87 but it'll have the oxygen sensor warning light that the '87 doesn't have

Cheers

I looked on ebay for parts in descending order of pricing and the pillar lights were up there!!

This will be fun.

Quick answer? Grab the whole car! Park it and smile.

Why? Coz Murphy dictates that what you pass up now will be the next that breaks or fails on yours!
If you have the garage space or yard area, any donor car on hand is a valuable asset.

Cheers

Agreed but bad enough I have the new one in the driveway, under two feet of snow.

Wife would kill me if I brought a parts car home!

I'm on the prowl for a building, I missed out on a huge barn less than a mile away for $45,000 two months ago.

Would she kill you for buying it or for bringing it home?

Any chance his wife wouldn't kill him if you bought the car and made arrangements for it to stay there for 90 days until you could find something?

Hide it under the snow and when spring thaw comes exclaim with a surprised look, "Honey, look what grew here."

Precisely. Sold my XJ-S before Christmas to a young enthusiast. Asking price all paid, but the car still lives in my big shed while he undertakes some repairs and upgrades. Suggest the OP reach out to others in your US Regional area. Even a yard and car cover turns a donor car into gold.

Cheers and best wishes,

It hasn't reached any higher than 15 here in over two weeks. I finally got to the car as swmbo told him get rid of it NOW!

Unfortuately I wasn't the first person there. I brushed off over two feet of snow and oil cap, washer and coolant reservoirs gone, I did get the air cleaner housing, all four side lights....I just need rear right side...both tail lights, rear and side badges, outboard headlight surrounds, ash trays, rear view mirror....found the cassette box, no cassette.

Body was shot, most other chrome gone, ecu gone, dash horrible.

Kinda disappointing but the 8 degree temps, wind and snow over my knees didn't help. Probably could have done more but it was harsh out there after an hour and a half!

Ouch . . . that's not living . . . that's surviving!

It would be grossly unkind to mention the warm, balmy days we are enjoying down under, so I won't. OOPS!
Best wishes mate.

Twenty-One below zero Fahrenheit this weekend. I know the car is an inanimate object but boy it must be pissed off at me after spending it's entire life in Viginia.

Sir William Lyons once mentioned that a Jaguar was as close as a machine could get to being a living thing.I have observed they are as individual as any group of people I've ever met, and a Whole lot easier to get on with, as they have no agenda, display no jealousy if you drive the Other car,

But they DO display emotions and blatant favoritism, and can hold grudges for a looong time.

So, Yeah. It's probably Massively ticked off at you and will stay that way until warm weather.... At Least!

Wow!

For many Aussies, we are coming off several days where maximum temps have nudged 50 centigrade (122 farenheit). My early 70s (thus mid 50yo) adult children still complain of pushing their bikes home from school because the melted tarmac roads had seen bike tyres and their shoes grow taller with sticky stones!

So, many of our earlier Jaguar issues concerned borderline (at best) cooling and vaporising fuel issues. The Mk1 in my avatar, Mk2s and S Type that followed were the borderline ones. Worst of our kitty litter in those days was the S1 E-Type, but a custom thicker core radiator rebuild sorted that eventually.

However, the S2 Daimler V12 was fine. Perhaps this owed some benefit from the extensive year-long testing, heavily camouflaged, of the pre-release XJ6 prototypes throughout the Aussie outback . . . so numerous were the prior complaints of inadequate cooling.

Hence my commiserations to all who are beset with all that interesting white stuff.

Cheers and best wishes,

When you get back to it, get the switchgear from the steering column. It's not hard to do and the signal, hazard and wiper switches are getting expensive and certainly don't last forever! You can pull the steering wheel fairly easily with the correct socket and a six inch extension for the center nut.

Good idea. Heading in the a.m. Sunday to a junkyard an hour away that just took delivery of an 86.
