Default Door Lock XJ6 Series 1-2

The left side door lock will not open from the outside by pushing the button.. Removed door card to find that the linkage works fine but won't push the pin up far enough to release the latch. All lubricated and working freely. Any experience with this ? Will add photos shortly !

Looking forward to the photos in the hope I can help - not something I have seen often. Most commonly was on S2 coupe's with doors that had dropped and were sitting on the lock strikers. Other times, the grease /lubricant had baked so hard inside the plastic latch housing on the door that the mechanism couldn't move. Soaked to soften and remove and re-greased recovered functionality... just some thoughts...
Allyn.

Yes, It is a coupe but door sag and alignment does not seem to be the issue. What I do see however is slop in the linkage when the button is pushed. Not sure if it is enough, but seems likely. Excuse the 40 plus years of dirt, but doesn't seem to be the problem. When I say Locked here I mean door closed and Unlocked Door Open. Next Reply shows Door actually "LOCKED" where mechanism moves the tab out from under the pin so no lift can occur.

What kind of video can we load if any ?

Default Test to eliminate tab wear.

I recall once needing to eliminate tab wear as the cause. The quick in situ test we did was to use a short piece of clear plastic tubing (such as used in the windscreen washer circuit or in aquariums) and slippd it over the pin to "fatten" it temporarily for the test. Once this was installed, the lock mechanism did function. Because it was in the days where a multitude of parts were easily obtainable, at the owner's request we simply fitted a new unit. Problem solved. The down-side is that there was no further investigations done as to why there was accelerated wear on the tab... sorry that probably isn't much use to you...

Default XJ6C Door Latch Issue

Concur ! One of my thoughts was just to clean it all up and put a tube spacer on the Pin, or as you suggest on the Tab. I'll let everyone know my progress. So sorry about the use of the term "Locked" instead of "Latched" in my postings.

This happened once on my Series 2, and I had to adjust the rods from the inside with the door closed in order to make it work properly again. I haven't had trouble since.

Default XJ6C Series 2 Door Locks

Saw that there were adjustment turnbuckles on the full length rods from the forward interior handle to the latch, but will that actually affect the push button linkage?

I haven't found any turn-buckles in my car, only these pinch-links to adjust linkages shown in the post I've linked to.
Yes, they do effect the linkage operation.

Right ! Turnbuckles probably added because of the longer door and I guess greater reliability. Think I'll just address the tab !

Default XJ6C Door Latch Issue

Interestingly ! It is winter here in Elkhart Lake,

Yep....Deer tracks !
Wisconsin and -1F this morning. Garage heated but space limited. Not leaving a car out just to work on my summer drive. Get back to the forum up the road a few weeks.

Default XJ6C Door Latch Issue

Was able to spend time cleaning up the mechanism and working on a solution. I can say I do not believe "Tab Wear" is a real issue. The tab is only about 1/16 Inch in thickness to begin with. I believe if there is wear, it is in the small plastic bushings or elsewhere in the linkage. I placed a piece of tubing over the pin, bent the tab upward slightly and the latch is now operating by pushing the button from the outside. I imagine an overhaul of the linkage is in order, but in the meantime, I may also install a clip on the tab to make it thicker.

Default XJ6C Door Latching

Putting tubing on pin may have helped the door to unlatch, but prevents it from locking. Back to square one, linkage & the tab !

I posted pictures in here using the terms Locked & Unlocked when I should have said Latched & Unlatched. Since the edit option seems unavailable, isn't there a way I can delete a posting or photo and repost a correction ?

Edit is only available for a limited time. After the EDIT button is gone you must ask Graham to fix it for you.

That would of course be a great option, but the problem actually looks like a failed 2 Pence plastic bushing on the lift rod. No joy in just replacing the entire unit.
