engine rattle at front area
I have a Xj6 six cylinder 4.0 liter engine that makes a rattling sound when first started for a couple of minutes. The noise was more intense and lasted longer when car firs came out of 8 month storage. It will have a quieter rattle when engine is warm and in netural. Will also have light rattle when setting at stop lite in gear. when the engine is revved just a little bit the rattle goes away. Cannot locate with hose to my ear. I have replaced all belts the idler pulley, the water pump, the alternator. this is a 1996 XJ6 engine. any ideas? tbirdmarsh

This is the wrong forum for your engine, as yours is an AJ16 all-alloy engine, not the completely different XK engine that came out in 1948. The two engines are completely different, albeit they are both straight six engines.
Try posting in the X300 forum.

Not familiar with the 4.0 liter engine either, but if you remove all the belts and run the engine for 2 minutes, does the rattle continue? If yes, it could be the timing chain or timing belt.
Firstly, welcome to teh Forum.
Please do an intro in the "New Members Area" when time permits.
As Fraser said, not the right area, BUT, the upper timing chain tensioner is the culprtit, and there are hundreds of threads about it in the X300 section.
Even a write up by myself about it.
