Gentlemen:

I'm posting this thread on behalf of my friend who acquired a '96 XK8 Coupe in a very poor condition but at a price he was willing to spend a small fortune to restore it. He had already put in metal secondary chain tensioners, replaced a couple of electronic modules as he was getting all kinds of electrical faults, etc. Now this is the final hurdle before taking the XK8 in for vehicle inspection (MOT) in order to renew the vehicle's road license.

After revving the engine from idle up to 2,000 rpm in neutral (with no strange sound), upon releasing the throttle, a strange knocking/rattling sound can be heard coming out from somewhere in the rear of the V8 engine or near the front of the ZF 5HP transmission or near the firewall. When the engine drops from 2,000 rpm back to idle, the strange sound goes away, leaving the V8 idling normally.

Can you all XK8 geniuses please give a hint for my friend's XK8 so that he can take his 19 year old XK8 coupe on the road again?
