Welcome!
I suspect you may not be talking about a Series I, II or III XJ6, which is what this forum is for, since there wasn't a 2.9 ever offered, and the 3.6 is a tough conversion for these cars...

What is your car, year and model? Maybe we can help direct you.

Andrew.

Tar, i have to correct you, here in Europe there was a 2.9 XK engine fitted in the XJ series 1. I believe it was only in the series 1.

No. You must be thinking of the 2.8 (2,792cc). It was indeed discontinued after Series I, never a particularly strong seller and prone to problems with holed pistons.

Regards,
Andrew.

If you can find an XJS it's a much easier swap. Motor and trams will almost bolt-in. Other smaller parts like the radiator and A/C lines will also "fit" with modifications. The complete XJS upgraded front and rear suspension will also bolt in with minor brake plumbing mods. XJS are cheap around here you can sometime but one for a very low cost. I'm not sure of the market in your area but I suspect it's similar.

Redrick, i have built a 4.0l XJ40 engine and transmission in my `77 series 2. If you use XJS engine brackets it fits perfect, only the transmission bracket needs rebuilding. The driveshaft has to be shortened an rebalanced. I have also swapped the steering rack to a XJ40 type, because your original steeringrack can`t handle the pressure from the XJ40 powersteering pump. You can search on the dutch jaguarforum: https://www.jaguarforum.nl/forum/top...met-xj40-blok/ ,here i describe my engineswap and the steeringrack exchange, lots of pictures included
