I had everything removed from the exhaust (cats, resonators, mufflers) but i kept the original design of the exhaust (2x3 into1 from the head, 2 into 1 where the cat was, then a y pipe under the floor, and out the back) with 2 inch pipe before the y and 1 7/8s pipe the rest of the way.

Best sounding car i ever drove

I connected the pipe with the gutted CAT with two pipes coming out, without connecting the over the axel pipes and the two rear mufflers. Then started it up. Had to shut it off real quick as it sounded way too loud and unmuffled. So I think the unmuffled concept is out. When I get the muffler hangers sorted out, I'm just going to install the rear mufflers back on and call it a day.

Bill"

Aw!! it would have been fun to just drive it around the block a time or two.

Way back when, I got my LT1 to fire up for it's first time. Only exhaust was two down pipes, one from each bank. Took it around the block a couple of times, Victory laps !!!
Easy on the throttle for more than one reason.

And, later, went to town in the same way. to the muffler shop. Nice roar if booted. but at town speed, not bad at all.

My Hot Rod of the 40's merely had headers and straight pipes all the way back. As long as I was light on the gas, t burbled nicely. But, ripped on opening the twin carbs.

Well... truth be told, I have to drive it to the body shop for painting in the next week. And I am not installing the two rear mufflers as they stick out from the rear splash pan, so I do have to drive it without mufflers for about 1 mile. Then I'll really know!!!!

Thread not closed for a reason - still have not accomplished what I want. And somewhat stalled at the moment as we are moving from one house in Palm City to another and busy packing the garage and the rest of the house. But still haven't stopped thinking Jaguar!

Update on the vibration I am getting from the engine after having gutted the CAT. I've replaced ALL the muffler hangers and the vibration is still there. It wasn't there before gutting the CAT. So I'm reasonably sure that it got created by that. I'm NOT done trying to resolve the muffler system to get the sound I want. Unfortunately the tone is purely subjective.

what kind of vibration? So you removed the honeycomb contents of the Down Catalytic, resealed it, pressure-tested it, and reinstalled it?

what about the second Y pipe catalytic? Did you do the European Y pipe?

did you correctly reinstall the transmission-to-y-pipe Clamp?

I did all the above to my '84 and I get no vibrations whatsoever.

It's hard to explain the vibration. It feels mechanical in nature, and happens when I blip the accelerator when at idle. Maybe I can try recording it and reply with a video/audio. But.. it wasn't there before messing with the exhaust system. I thought replacing the exhaust hangers would do the trick, but it didn't. Never pressure tested the gutted CAT convertor. Not sure what that would prove? It doesn't seem to leak. Second Y pipe Catalytic? Not sure what that is. No never used the European Y pipe. Transmission to Y pipe clamp. My system does not have such a thing. See

pic of my system.

ok, I'll explain:

1) when I removed all the junk inside the Down or "first" catalityc, it had to be re-welded. So it was re-welded and pressure-tested for leaks. That proved
that there was no leaks.

2) the picture you posted shows an American Y pipe complete with Second catalityc aka "Balancer", The European Y pipe does not have this Secondary
catalityc. The system "breathes" better, less obstructions.

3) the picture I am posting here shows the European Y pipe without the second catalityc. It also shows the Clamp assembly that both European and American exhaust systems have.
