Default Fog light selector

From what I can tell I have the stock light selector for the XJ6 S3 86. I can't get it to select the fog lights even though the selector is labeled for it. Is it possible that it is jammed? Or did someone or the wrong part on for the label.

As I recall, (and its a long time ago, so I may be wrong), you have to first push the knob in, then turn to get to the fog light position.

the fog position is normally blocked in USA cars.

to unblock, pull knob off the shaft.

you will see a C clip at the inner shaft.

pull the C clip off the shaft.

replace knob.

to turn the fog lamps on, move the switch to the fog position and push it in.

Note that USA cars turn off the outer headlamps when the fog lamps are turned on. Federal regulations.

if you want to defeat this ridiculous regulation, get a European headlights switch.

Yeah, thanks. I pulled it apart and figured it out. I had just come back to post my findings when I saw your post.

that's great but you didn't have to remove the entire switch!! haha!

the Knob has a button on the side of the shaft, you press it in and the knob comes off. You can see the button in the picture you posted.

Tip: the Dimmer / rheostat Knob for the dash lights comes off the same way, pushing a button on the side.

I had committed to the idea of wiring a secondary fog light switch. I don't like doing vertical soldering, so I removed the switch. When I commit, I don't do halves. I've soldered most of the joints I could access in the car. Everything else got cleaned or replaced.

Odd, or is in it?

I fired up the jaguar and used it for errands yesterday. I gazed at the light switch and reminded myself of the "FOG" position. And the past posts elsewhere as to the why and how. The harness is in place to add in lamps. I have a set of period correct Hella lamps.
The task resided on my list for over decade. Not done. Now, unlikely.

CAVEAT, CA has rules on FOG use as well. The main lams must also be on! Defies the FEDS??? Nowadays, a "normal" occurrence.

Careful what you write online dude. You essentially just admitted culpability in a way that is admissable in court.

Although, I will acknowledge that the vagueness and plethora of laws nowadays allows them to nail you over just about anything. Like a local ordinance that forbids fishing on Sundays.

A week's pay says that you'll never find a Federal regulation/law (FMVSS) regarding use of fog lamps with/without headlights, high beam or low beam, for passenger vehicles.

You might find something with respect to commercial vehicles.

State law is another matter. Most states require that fog lamps be used only in conjunction with headlamps. Or, that's the way most states laws were written for a long time.

It isn't...or wasn't.... unusual, on world market cars, for circuits to be designed to extinguish headlamps when fog lamps were turned on, to prevent lighting blowback.

I once bought an "Genuine Jaguar" accessory fog lamp kit for my Series III. It came with a relay and directions to keep the headlamps (low beam only) on when the 'fog' position was selected....because that was common state law, at least at the time.

As mentioned, the ROW headlight switch allows a multitude of lighting combinations. As I recall it's a dual-plane switch with 6 or 7 combinations of lighting available, including rear fog lamps. Jose will know.

My XJS (with factory installed fog lamps) switch had one position to turn on the fog lamps with headlamps on (low beam only) and another which extinguished the headlamps when the fog lamps were turned on.

Cheers

one of the positions of the European / Australian headlights switch is for REAR bumper foglights which are not fitted to American cars.

You can use that position for additional front lamps in the Series 3.

In my car I have motorhome lamps that have fog and driving lights in each housing, and I control them from the Euro switch. These positions do not turn off the outer headlights as they do in American cars when selecting the FOG position but the switch does have a FOG LIGHTS ONLY position.

What I hear is that finding the Euro switch is not easy.

you can see the Euro switch in my website:

Not legal in CA. head lights must be on as well. No drive onhe fogs alone, or any other supplemental lamp.
