Classic.

Love that body roll, but the old girl kept herself composed the whole way.

Elinor will get a kick out of that I reckon.

Having slalomed (many years ago - mid 60s) a purpose built Lotus 7 with 1300 cc engine with Weber carbs and modified rear handbrake. I can, from experience, appreciate how much stress the old Jag must have experienced at rear cage attachments and diff bearings (smell the diff hypoid as it burns off when it contacts the inboard rear discs) not to mention the puny little transmission pushing 2.88 rear gears. My old Lotus had 4.56 rear gears and weighed less than1400 lbs, things happened fast.

Could not imagine "slalom beating" my restored XJ6 VDP for a small trophy.

When you read about the "Jaguar racing heritage", they are not talking about a heavy 6 cylinder 4000 lb sedan on skinny tires, known for soft boulevard ride (royal family liked them for that reason) but rather a special built /modified, factory special supported by large crews of factory mechanics and from a distance, looks like a family sedan (somewhat).

Its not something i do every day!! i had heard about it and decided to give it a try, i was there one day and made 5 runs, getting more aggressive each run! car handled it just fine, other than totally shredding a set of brand new tires!!! Was i tempting fate? probably, but fate was on my side that day!!!!

Good job ! I never got below 50 with my XJ6 and, although I slalomed my XJS, I never did so on the JCNA course.

Slalom driving takes some discipline. Slower is faster. I'm sure you know what I mean

Cheers

Never got to try that. sure does look like tons of fun!!!

Reminds me of a quote by "little Al" of his four time Indy winner, Big Al Unser. "Dad was so smooth".

wow! it is a heavy long car to handle!! but if you had 235-60-15 tires none of the skids would have happened.

How did I miss this??!! Sorry, Darren!

WHAT FUN!! I *LUV* cornering Gs!
I wouldn't do that to Nix though as I do NOT look forward to re-bushing the rear any time soon.

And even if I did try that (After said re-bushing had occurred), it would be with an added rear sway bar! I think her lower center of mass with the 700R4 might make a decent show if nothing else.

If the opportunity comes though, I'd take the Adequate Vehicle on a course in a heart beat, just to give everyone a good laugh.

Elinor:

You might be surprised at what "Adequate" and you can do!!!!

All:

I saw a recent segment on the last of "Mythbusters" TV show. Simulated road course in the dirt. Smooth time vs "tail out" in the turns. Result, smooth just a tad faster.

Way back, I recall what I think was "Toyota Challenge" ordinary little "adequates" on a street course. Some retired old "masters" jn some. Parnelli Jones, Brian Redmond, etc. They could get the "adequates' around, fast.....

I took a track day at Road Atlanta a few years ago ...drove open wheeled track cars. The instructor took us around the track using some tiny late model ford granny car. I expected he'd take a lap and then get out of our way, but I couldn't keep up with him! He was so fast through the corners that he was gone on the straights and we had to chase him. An econobox! And we're in race cars! I think he was eating a sandwich too...

AHA!! As I always suspected!
It's the driver as much or more than the car!! (knowing the course probably helped)
Actually, I find that Enormously encouraging!

Do you have a thread detailing your 700r4 conversion?

The car came to me already converted to 350/700R4, done by Interjag of Huntington Beach in 1986 (according to documentation). Therefore I can take no credit for any the drive train.

I will say the rear mount is rather clunky and awkward. I'm sure there must be better options out there.

Years ago I was at a JCNA slalom somewhere in BC...can't remember exactly and it doesn't matter...and there was a fellow there ...and ex-pat...who was (so I was told) a rather accomplished rally driver back in the UK who was just visiting with friends who happened to be in the Jag club.

Anyhow.....

One of the other fellows asked him...the rally driver... if he'd like to have a go at the slalom. He agreed.

The car he was driving was the most clapped out Series 1 XJ6 you can imagine. All banged up, tires bare and 4 different sizes, smoke form the exhaust, body rusted.

He turned in the 2nd fastest time of the day and made it look like nothin' I'll bet he was whistling as he went thru the course. The fastest time was an XJS, fully prepped for slalom work !

Cheers
