Default Fuel cap seal seems non existent?

Hi guys,

The gasket on the fuel filler gap on my 1972 XJ6 is completely dried out (see attached). Water can (and has) seeped past and into the tank.

The problem is - I can't for the life of me find a replacement. The only thing I see available for these cars is a skinny O-ring (C46161) and this gasket:

none of which match what I have.

The closest thing I could find is part #13 in this diagram:
https://www.scparts.co.uk/sc_en/brit...iller-cap.html

It's the whole retainer (with the seal) that attaches to the cap via star locks. However, no one seems to have it, and can't find a real part # anywhere. I checked Jaguar Classic and found nothing for a Series 1.

Can anyone help? Am I missing something? Surely this is a common replacement item on these cars?

Your gas cap seal is a little different than mine, but appears to work the same. I ended up making my own gasket from 1/8" rubber and using the old one as template.

Not as hard as it might appear. Take both star locks off one side of the gasket retainer and slide the retainer out from the pins on the other side, there should be a spring behind the retainer. On the back of the retainer should also be a rivet(s) that holds everything together, drill that rivet out and the metal plug, O-ring, and flat gasket should all come apart. Pay attention at this point to the orientation of the parts if necessary, mine had a left/right orientation to the gasket retainer. Mark inner/outer dimensions of new gasket, cut it out, clean or replace anything else while you're apart, and put it back together. I used a small "tinners rivet" to replace the one I drilled out, but I was able to get to both sides of the rivet and simply peen it over, yours doesn't look the same. A small screw might have to be used. Slide the whole retainer back under one side and use new star locks on the other (recommended) and you should be done. Then on to the other cap.

I just bought a pair from Moss (former XKs unlimited), they were in an East Coast facility. P/N 03-1501 GAS CAP SEAL PAIR {flat round disc rivet hole in center}
They have P/N 23-1500 on the West Coast {center hole about 1 1/2" in dia.}

You need the cap seal as shown in the SC parts page. The other seal is for the assembly where it bolts down to the wing aperture. The photo of your existing seal shows it is completely knackered. However, this seal sits on the filler neck which is above the floor of the aperture, so you must be getting water sitting in that well, which indicates to me the drain hole or tube is blocked.

Good point, I will clean it out. The JagLovers forum informed me that, more often than not, its the seal underneath the filler assembly (under the 4 flathead screws) that allows water inside the tank. I will replace it as well, assuming it is just as worn as the other seal.

Thank you all for your tips and help - very much appreciated!
