Default Fuel Pump Replacement Recommendations

Greetings, all. I've been working on this 74 to get it back on the road. It's either been in the former owner's yard or in my garage for the past twenty years, so the list is long to get it roadworthy again.
One thing that came up years ago was a leaking right side tank fuel pump, the solution to that problem being to avoid using it. Now the left side started leaking last week. I've never seen a system with two pumps and a tee, only one pump and a switching valve. I'm looking for suggestions on a replacement, and am not against updating it to a switcher valve and only one pump.

Thoughts?

Is it the submerged pump ? If it's just a leak, then surely only a gasket issue. The internet shows some of these, but all used. I don't think they are available new anymore. I think the alternative is to fit an external aftermarket pump. This needs to provide fuel at low pressure as your car is carburetted.

No, this uses two identical pumps, one for each tank, in the spare tire well. They feed into a tee, and then on to the engine. It's clear that these pumps dried out over time, but I can't figure out whether this car came with two pumps instead of a switcher valve. Also trying to locate even one of these pumps as a replacement, or if I should replace them with aftermarket pumps. I don't mind having two pumps, even if it's not factory.

Aha, these look like the pumps that go "tick-a-tick-a-tick and were a common thing here in the UK on all cars with electric pumps. They were once made by SU Fuel Systems, but are now supplied by a company called Burlen Fuel Services, but most Jaguar suppliers sell them. They work via a solenoid that gives the ticking noise.

How does this look: -

That's the pump! The fact that there's two of them still boggles my mind a bit.
I'm still trying to determine the best method of repair - keep two pumps or adapt a single pump with a switcher valve. I've sourced a pair of pumps that should work. I think I like the redundancy of two systems in place, if for no other reason than the wiring and plumbing is already there. Are these pumps powered by a relay(s)?

Here's the fuel pumps listed by the maker, now Burlen Fuel Systems. YOU will see that there is a repair kit available. Surely worth trying ! I am not sure if they have a US agent, or ship directly. website has lots of info. Jaguar were a user of all their stuff when the SU company made the stuff.

Fuel pumps for AUD 647 for Jaguar 1946 onwards XJ6 4235 cc - SU Carburetters - SU Carburetters

And a bit of history

History - SU Carburetters

Of course it is all EFI now, carbs are history unless you have a carburettor car, of course !! My MG Midget as twin SUs, but pump is mechanical, not electric.

Frasier,

Thank you very much for your insight and information. I too have a xj6 with fuel pump issues. I am choosing to install one pump and connect both tanks via the tee provided. A simple solution. My jag is powered by a chevy 300hp, 350 with th350 with 3:31 rear end. A nice running reliable ride. Very smooth and with more power. Thank you again for your info.
