I would suspect that the fuel filter would be the cause. It is under the floor in the trunk to the inside passanger side. The oil filter is on the right side of the engine near the engine mount.

You may also want to run some injector cleaner through your system. If you bought your car at auction, there's no telling how long it had been sitting, and it doesn't take long for fuel to go bad. As for the fuel switch (and where it's at), you may want to go get a Haynes manual for your car. I have a 76 XJ-12, and all my fuel lines ran (I changed em) in the trunk right in front of the bumper, and that's where the fuel tank switch was.
