Default Gday folks

Hi ne wto the forum saying hello have a 71 series one xj6 which Im trying to get started. Was subject to an old resto then left standing for a long period under a carport in a seaside area so the chrome work is pitted and front bar is shot. Anyone near melbourne got a good series one front bar?

The car came with no key and not running. Ive managed to geta key cut and the starter turning, now working on cleaning up electrics in the low tension sircuit, found the ballast resistor to be totally gummed up with crud, replaced that, and the distributor cap on the wrong way round and believe the firing order 180 degrees out.

I have already gained some useful information on the cam timing from a thread below, thankyou.

A minor thing, long time since ive used points do the connectors from the condenser and low tension line from distributor go below the insulation on the points spring of above it?

Not a lot works on this car right now but privileged to be working on one of sir william lyons masterpieces.

All the best from melbourne, australia. Mick

Welcome Mick.

Mmm, many, many years since points also. Memory (not the best), the wires go under the insulator (thus making contact with the spring arm), so the "spring" of the moving contact "makes/breaks" the earth circuit to fire the coil.

Sounds like you have some "fun" ahead of you, but satisfying all the same.

Hmmm. Spoke to the local parts bloke selling me a rotor button and plugs and he said the opposite. I know Ill look at one of my other passions a leyland p76 6 cylinder its languishing in the driveway and it was going until it blew all the oil out of the breather hole but it has points in it and they were no problem. I hate points, so fiddly. Mick

No fuel, pumps going like the clappers, check RH tanks by opening bung, nothing comes out. That is definitely out of fuel. LH tank the drain bolt is missing so that hasnt had fuel in it for a while. Remember the seller told me on tank was leaking so they didnt use it.

It certainly will MGJ!! How are things in wagga. Visited cootamundra a number of times lovely town. In the process of ordering some new gaskets for fuel pump entry and exit points. No point putting it back together half arsed. Someone told me there is a filter in the pumps will have a look at them too may have some sludge in them.

Interesting to note the rubber gasket between body and fuel cap needs replacing, this would be a possible entry point for moisture and could possible explain rust between the cap and the rear window rubber. Just thinkin!
