Default Hard shifting

82 xj6 series 3. Just drained the tranny fluid and replaced the filter. Before changing the fluid the car jerks a little bit when shifting between reverse and drive. When driving the car seems to shift fine when accelerating. Would you think the tranny is going bad if it jerks when going into reverse or drive? Used type F fluid and the fluid was never changed before but the car only has about 40,000 miles on it

keep checking the fluid level for the next drives to make sure you are at the optimum level, but not overly filled, better a little less than too much.

If the tranny is shifting fine, part of your problem might be lack of use !! Jaguars like being driven, otherwise they complain.

also you might get the car on a lift and visually check the transmission square rubber mounts and the large round rubber mount.

Ok what would the mounts look like if they are bad? Is it easy to tell?

not easy at all unless they are totally destroyed. They are rubber squares bonded to metal, they almost look like brake pads, or engine mounts.

You need a bright lamp, real bright, look for torn rubber, or separated from the metal, etc.

It might be just creep. Usually minor thing related to a slightly high idle speed.

Check the tach at idle. Less than 1000 RPM ?

Just a guess as to Jaguar tolerance.

around 800 would be better.

here's what you want to check, the two rubber transmission mounts shown by the red arrows. This assembly is located more or less directly below the center console area under the car.

There is also a large round rubber "donut" which you want to look at and check,
that one is located forward of the above assembly.

don't try to check by getting under the car, you have to get the car on a lift.
