Default HELP 86 vdp NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH diagram troubleshooting

HELP 86 vdp NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH diagram troubleshooting i am trying to help my mother "drive safer" as the switch is on the fritz sometimes her car wont turn over when in park but will in neutral, other times neither. and finally many times it can start while in gear!!

i just can't identify the switch and its wire path now that i removed the trim plate surrounding the gear shift. any advice on typical troubleshooting procedures AND assistance with locating the location of the relevant parts and wires would be appreciated!! ie shop manual scans,photos/diagrams

thanks very much in advance

There is nothing on your car in the location of the gear shifter that is remotely related to your problem, other than the adjustment for the shift cable, which does not sound like it is remotely related to your problem.

The neutral safety switch (also referred to as the "start/inhibit switch"), is under the car, right where I described. You have a starter rely going bad, unless you check like I described and find the bolt fell out for the neutral safety switch. That's as far as I'm going to go.
