The battery died- was able to unlock driver door with key but key will not allow me to unlock trunk so I can charge - what do I do? Eve

 

You're in the wrong forum for your year of car. Try posting in the XJ40 forum. However, it is normally possible to connect to a terminal in the engine compartment somewhere, with the earth side to some connection on the bodyshell.

 

If you can't get into the trunk, you could try to connect the charger's positive lead to the the positive connecter on the starter. Usually these are the thickest cables in the entire engine bay.

Then connect the negative to a good ground. Slowly charge the battery, no more than 10amps....should do the trick...
