Hey Guys, looking for a little help identifying the components on the rear wall of the trunk and their purpose. I'm looking to relocate to free up space.
Not being able to relocate the sunroof moter puts an end to my thoughts of opening that area to make a pass thru for long items (2X4's). My Maxima has a fold down rear armrest and an opening in the rear bulkhead for just that purpose and we use it alot!
in the 1980's Jaguar Accessories Catalog offered a roof rack, it looked awful on the XJ but it did the job. I don't know if the four brackets caused damage to the stainless gutter moldings, but I assume it left marks in them. I don't think many were sold.
Jose, The reason I like the "pass-thru" concept is because it is totally invisible once the rear center armrest is in it's stowed position, so nothing affects the lovely lines of the Series 3.
So I'm a little confused..
Say you could move everything to the other side... It would still be on the other side of the thin piece of metal that you are thinking of removing...
And that piece of metal also holds the seat back in place.. So with no chance of installing a seat that reclines forward for the open concept, how would that help with opening the trunk space?
Now back in the day some folks experimented with making their XJ a Ute... Which basically does away with anything behind the drivers seat...
But I don't think that unless you want to permanently remove the rear seats, you'll get the same effect from the XJ that you do a modern Maxima...

David, the original poster asked about moving all the electronics to the other side tio get more space in the trunk, then Iramphal asked about making a pass thru cut.
Hi David, The proposed pass thru is only thru the small 8" X 10" space directly behind the Rear seat center armrest. Neither rear seat would be moveable/tiltable.
Once the armrest is folded down, the opening would be revealed. I think it would be doable.
Jose... You are exactly correct as always... I was reading down through the posts late last night and got it all mixed up...
So as far as moving everything... I got a chance to ride in a converted XJ years ago, and the ECU for the LT1 had been moved into the passenger seat compartment. That would be doable in the Series 3, as that big harness that goes to the back for the ECU pretty much is only for the ECU...
Everything else on the rear bulkhead is on a single harness that splits under the seat and goes to either side of the rear of the car... (including the fuel pump, aerial, and rear lights....) I think that harness could pretty easily be split to shorten it where ever it is needed...
The problems would be the things already mentioned... The sunroof motor, and the covers for the cabin vents.... But it would be a ton of work for just a little gain for sure...
Ian,
Thanks for the explanation... Of course I was thinking of the fully folding seat....
So I looked at the seat back today... It would likely be doable...
I think there is a trim piece in there that would have to come out....
But as mentioned earlier, the sunroof motor would be in the way. With it in place the pass through would only be a few inches at best...
Another consideration would be a likely more considerable presence of boot smells, especially fuel smells.... And you'd also probably get a lot of noise from the fuel pump... (Even with the center armrest in the up position)
I think the metal bulkhead, and the seat material probably help to keep those at a minimum...
But in theory, it would be a way to get a little bit of a pass through there for sure...
Cheers

I think it was elswhere, but I did see a cargo carry enhanced XJ. But, a flat bed ! A long one. From just behind the b ost and way back and fat on each side. One could haul many bales of hay on it!!!
