Project car I picked up, as is. 1987 XJ12 (converted to a 350 Chevy sm. block)

On the right side. Behind the charcoal canister I removed, there is this canister. It is a sealed unit, with only one outgoing hose to the engine.





Hose I am holding is from the canister.

I had a mechanic friend come over and look at it. He was stumped; thought it maybe had something to do with the conversion; maybe something left unfinished, but because the unit is sealed and there are no other connecting hoses or even a spot for any he was not able to understand the point of it. His recommendation was to remove it and cap the intake at the engine.

I was OK with that suggestion... but thought I best ask on the forum if anyone has some wisdom here before I remove this.
The whole motivation here is to free the last bolt of the front right side wing (body panel) that this thing is blocking. The way that this dang thing is mounted on the frame, I will have to break off the clamps in order to get free the last bolt that is holding the front right side wing. I'll then have to re engineer a better way of mounting it... if it is superfluous, I'd rather not the extra work! Or have unneeded parts on the car.

Vacuum reservoir???? Just a guess!!

Good guess. But, I sure can't confirm it. Not, can I guess that it was a part
of the V12 system ? Can't tell if it is connected to manifold vacuum or port.


But, it looks like SBC is TBI. A need for it?


Oh, if it is a reservoir, the nose should have a one way valve of sone type,


Gaining on my chipper fix. Found some keys in my spare boxes. They fit the grove in pulley and engine shaft. Now to fid an Allen as a grub screw that fits. has to be done in a hole, The pulley is entrapped. I'd have to remove the engine to free it. And that creates more issues. But, I'm on the trail. I've an alternate idea as to keeping it all together. A 5/16' bolt and washers on the crank end....

I am certain it was not part of the original. None of the manuals I have show this. Just the charcoal canister, which would be forward of. Also, the way it mounted to the body, while done quite well, does not look like stock.

Looks a lot like the vacum reservoir on my BMW. Normally has the hose you are showing back to manifold vacum and another off to the brake booster. You may not be able to see the other port for the hose until you get it off. If not used its only a force for evil unmetered air.

My car has it, as did all the V12s as far as I know. It's a vacuum reservoir for the power brake system; factory installed

DD is one of the folks that knows the cars from stem to stern.


Still might check and see if it has the one way valve. O'wise, it is as stated, just a big vacuum leak!!!


How does the SBC run? N ice and smooth, not at all, r with issues.
