hi: i want to rotate the distributor assembly on my 87 xj6 so i can adjust the timing. i removed the pinch bolt and tried to twist the distributor but could not get it to budge at all. is there some other bolt that needs to be loosened? the ever-so-helpful service manual offers no useful instruction.

? how do i get the distributor to loosen so i can advance and/or retard the timing?

? for future reference, how do i go about removing the entire assembly? again i removed the pinch bolt with no apparent effect.

Is your car an XJ6 Series 3, or the XJ6 that was introduced in the UK in 1986 ? The two engines are different in every way. As far as I know, all you need to loosen is the clamping bolt, but over time the distributor shaft may have seized itself into the housing. Have you tried a light tap with a hammer ? Don't overdo it, though !
