Hi
I have a series 3 XJ6 and have a new problem in that the front door warning lights are not going out when the doors are closed....
am charging the battery currently, but any suggestions as to what might have suddenly gone wrong would be gratefully received!!

Don't laugh, but does your power antenna work? If not, check the fuse. If the fuse is blown, replace it....and see if your problem with the door lights goes away

There was a documented problem where a blown antenna fuse would cause some sort of feedback that resulted in the door lights staying on. There was a tech bulletin describing the fix, which was to add a diode in the lighting circuit

If this doesn't pan out we can dig deeper

Cheers
DD

can also be one of the door jamb switches. The plunger sometimes loses contact due to corrosion inside and remains open.

spray WD40 into each jamb switch pressing and releasing the plunger many times to "exercise" them.

as a last resort, remove the jamb switch. They can be opened and the inner contacts cleaned with emery paper.

I tried that on the driver door switch on my car. Not good enough what I did learn is that it was worn in such a way as to be unstable side to side . Press lateraly and the light would come on. A swap with the rear door on the driver sides found the same issue., Passenger door, OK.

Stopped messing with them!!

I have a healthy door switch, courtesy of a J-L lister.. Alas, the wires got lost in the panel. Fishing has a risk to other stuff in there., .
So, deferred as of now. other life issue, preempt..

Side bar: I abandoned IE as a browser !! Using Edge. Far better. Just a learn exercise...
