Advice on onwing Jaguar! That's a tall order. I suspect that someone who's suffered on Fieros should be well prepared. I've owned Jaguars for over 20 years. Overall, they are very reliable, especially those built after 1990. Earlier models were prone to electrical problems. The 4.0 liter straight 6 is a superb engine, it will give you around 20 mpg and easily last 300K miles. I will never consider converting it. Parts are expensive, even if you do the work yourself. For example, the in-tank fuel pump will set you back over $700. The power brake system uses a dedicated hydraulic pump that can be very expensive. Regular maintenance items (brake pads, etc.) are not that expensive. But, overall, be ready to pay more for any part than a Fiero's.

If you have specific questions on 90 through 90 XJ40, I will be happy to try to answer.

Best of luck.

that reminds me: the 1988 XJ-40 self-leveling rear suspension system was a nightmare. the repair was so expensive many people got rid of the cars, later on a shock-system was designed (aftermarket I think), to convert and eliminate the self-leveling system. The convertion was to my knowledge, satisfactory.

I think the conversion kit was an offcial kit from the factory. My father's 88 1/2 was converted at San Francisco British. He'd had so much trouble with the suspension and brakes that the conversion was covered by Jaguar. Lost the self-levelling - a feature that was great when it worked.
