Cool Kent wheel centre hub cap

Hi all,
I’m new to the forum, though have been a Jaguar tragic for many years. I have a 75 XJ6 C, a 60 Mk2 3.8 (5spd) and a xk120/ mk5 donor replica in pieces.

The XJC has Kent wheels but no centre hub caps. I tried the lattice rims from an xjs which looked great, but they rubbed the front lower steering arm. So I’m back to the Kent rims. I know the standard little cap with the 3 sprung retaining clips are available, but I’ve never liked them. There must be an option other than leaving the centre hub exposed? Any ideas? I note that the bearing dust cap sits proud to the hub hole, which I guess limits things (unless you can get a lower profile bearing dust cap….. ?

it is a p.i.t.a. no matter how you do it, but you might use spacers in the front hubs to move the wheels out a bit, I did that with the Teardrop wheels I use. I have not found a lower profile cap. As far as center emblems for the Kent wheels, experimenting is the way to find caps that fit flush.

I’m in Queensland Australia and the State Government outlawed spacers - so insurance implications if there’s an accident so decided not to go down the spacer route. Someone on the forum must have come up with a solution for the Kent’s. The OEM caps just don’t do it for me, don’t fit well unless siliconed in…..

If the lower steering arms only scrape a littlie bit, you can shim the arms away by that little bit with washers under the arms to the uprights. But you have to redo the toe-in!!!!!!!

I've an idea that the lattice wheels came in two widths. If yours are the wide pattern, they are quite sort after. I'm sure someone with the narrow size would be pleased to swap and pay a premium.

Yes I think you’re right. Mine were the wider and I sold them to a fellow in Melbourne who had restored an XJS.

I’m surprised that no one has suggested a hub replacement for the Kents. I can’t be the only one who dislikes the OE version!

Series 3 front uprights are the same as XJS, I think? Swapping uprights to series 3/XJS should allow all the XJS wheel options and give you the later brakes.

1. My 83 XJ wears lattice wheels with no clearance issues. They came free and clean as a whistle from a local Kiwi !!! But, sans caps. I like the ones that are on the Kent wheels., I could not conjure a safe way of using them. I rouded up some decnt caps on Ebay, Delighted.

2. I understand the limitation of wheel spacers. Some are dangerous junk No more than washers that eliminate the center support. All the load goes to the lug studs! BAD.

There are proper spacers. More expensive, of course. But machined to retain the center relation. Wheel load shared by the ctnters..

Carl.

Hi Carl, My car (and I think all XJCs) is a series 2 and they have slightly different front geometry to the series 3, so your right the lattice wheels fit on the series 3 without any changes.
I actually bought a pair of spacers from the US with the loading sharing centers, but the law here does not make a distinction- they are spacers and so illegal…..
My job this afternoon (Brisbane is under lockdown for the next 4 days) is to pull the spare wheel and find my vernier and measure up the center hub and shape and look for something to fit.

Or, you could "blueprint" them.

Beautiful car. Great bumpers. Was the roof stock? Any pics you can post of the inside?
