Default Labelling

I recently purchased a 1986 XJ6 4.2. I was asked what model it was by someone as they expected to find the XJ6? label on the rear of the trunk. In my case it is not there, only ID is the label on the side of the front fenders properly identifying the model.

Is that the way it was with this model?

Thanks

Graham

It should say "Jaguar" to the left of the rear license plate and "XJ6" to the right of the plate. The only thing on the fenders should be the leaping cat emblems.

There's a growler emblem in the grille and a growler in each wheel center cap.

And that's it!

It's common to find a leaping cat hood ornament but those were an add-on and not facotry installed.

Cheers

Thanks Doug, something is not right then. Nothing on the rh side of the trunk lid, nothing that I can see in the centre of the "honeycomb" wheels.
Leaping cat on the hood, and the front fender labels are black with a leaping cat and "XJ6 4.2" I am unable to post pictures as yet or I would.

???

The honeycomb wheels are not original to the car so I don't know what emblems they'd have. Are they a Jaguar wheel or aftermarket?

As for the rest, well, somebody has just switched emblems around to suit their liking

Cheers

There will be some other clues too to help you determine the model. If there is no badge on the back (my guess a previous owner removed it) then an easy way of determining what model you have is whether your car is a 4 seater or a 5 seater.

In the Vanden Plas model (top of the line version of the XJ6) they were only 4 seaters, with only 2 seats in the back. If however you have a middle seat and seatbelt in the back you have the XJ6.

When you mentioned the honeycomb wheels they sound like they might be the BBS alloys from the XJS.

Doug I am too new to the Jaguar scene to know what rims they are. They were on the car when I bought it a month ago.

Alex, I am sure there are only 2 seat belts in the rear, I will however take the cover off at first opportunity and recheck.

Thanks to both of you for your responses.

The back seat will look like 2 sculpted seats that form together, otherwise it will just look like a normal rear bench seat. Hope this helps!

But if it only has 2 rear seats, you've got yourself a Vanden Plas!!

This can help you familiarize yourself with the Jaguar XJ a little better (yours is a series 3)

I found a picture of a 86 VDP with the same wheels near the bottom of the page. "Henrys Jag"

Alex, I have had the rear seat out and it is a bench with a fold down centre armrest.

The red XJ6 on the site you sent me has the same wheels. Maybe they are the "pepperpot alloys" referred to?

Oh wow yes those are the pepperpot alloys. I was referring to a later model XJS wheel, but the pepperpots that you have are much much better!!!

Sounds like you have a standard XJ6! They are really great cars to own. Is this your first Jag?

You should post some pictures so we can all see your Jag!!

I owned a Mark 2 for a short while when I was very young, enjoyed the car but could not afford to keep it. I will post some pictures once I get enough posts that they will allow me to.

This one has only 105,000 km or 68,000 miles since new. It has been repainted to the original "Cobalt Blue". The fellow I bought it from removed all chrome etc. prior to painting. He was somewhat of a jag collector, but needed room for a recent purchase of a 85 Porsche.

Well I do believe you have enough posts to post some pictures. You only need ten postings.

Its good though to buy from a previous owner that truly cares for his cars! Be prepared for some hands on work though with the car. Especially when it comes to the electrics. They can conk out randomly, but its usually just a bad ground wire, faulty connection or a fuse that is the problem.

Part of the reason I love Jags so much is because they surprise you constantly. The little faults are all apart of the character. I can put up with a few problems for a car that is a joy to drive and has gorgeous curves!

I contacted the fellow I recently purchased the 86 XJ6 from and he had done a little customizing on the labels. Apparently what is missing on the trunk lid RHS is a rectangular label that says "Sovereign". He had moved the front fender labels up from the lower area of the fender to mid fender, these state XJ6 4.2.

Ok what is the differnce between a Sovereign and an XJ6. I have found that they different production levels for each in 1986?

Thanks for all the input.

The Sovereign has some up-market interior trim and was more fully equipped...I can't rememeber the exact details, sorry.

The Soveriegn was between the standard XJ6 and the VanDen Plas.

This is an excellent source of info and explains the different models and how they were outfitted for different markets...which is rather complicated.

It was written by Gregory Andrachuk. I've seen most of the 30 or so Ser III Jags he has owned....all of them gorgeous. He's a terrific guy and really knows these cars.
