Looking at 84 jaguar Xj6 need help !
hey guys I've never owned a classic jag but have always loved them ive seen this ad pop up in the last week and am really thinking about going for it ! Can any of you experienced jag owners tell me how this looks with just the initial photo ive posted thankyou guys so much
Looks very nice in the pics, but you can't tell much. I wonder what's under the front seat coverings? 184,000km's is 114,000 miles. That's not exactly "low mileage" as advertised. Good to have records though. Being as it is in Austrialia (had to look that up in Google Maps - thought it was in the US State of WA - not so) I can't relate to the $9,200 asking price as to what that is in USD.
Good luck! Put eyes on it.

Hi there, that's an odd one, being right-hand drive. [Edit: thought this was Washington state when I wrote that] Looks like it has been repainted? (The factory coach lines are gone), so I'd want some idea of condition prior to painting (rust, collision etc). The original pain on these through 1986 is nasty acrylic stuff that can crack and craze in the heat...usually on horizontal surfaces but this ad mentions sun damage on a vertical surface. If it is still the acrylic, it all has to be removed for repainting, you can't paint over it.
That wouldn't be consider cheap if in $US but I think you're in Australia so maybe not so bad.
Whether this is the one for you or not, go and take a close look, look over the maintenance records if possible to see what's been done, and go for a drive. Enjoy the hunt! Interior condition is important because of potential cost to rectify.

1984 and 1985 were two important years at Jaguar because of Sir John Egan taking over Quality Control from around 1982 through 1986. Around 1986 Aston Martin recruited Egan from Jaguar to do the same miracles at Aston Martin and quality went downhill again at Jaguar.
So, owning a 1984 model built in June 1983, I am witness to those year's quality.
Prices on XJ-6 are going up, so if you don't buy it, someone will.
issues to look for are rust along the bottom of front and rear windscreens, exhaust system rusted parts, air conditioner, headlining fabric, all repairable, some repairs costing more than others. Parts are available worldwide. Many suppliers.
the intermittent wipers problem will most likely be the stalk switch on the steering column. It is a common fault in the Series 3 XJ, (1979-1987), but those can be repaired/rebuilt or you can find a new old stock one. Overall, the wipers are lazy in these cars, so don't expect a modern pantograph system, they have a cable-operated system from the 1950's.

Whether you purchase, and whether you ask Roadbend to do work, you will have the info to better negotiate. Let me assure you that I have no relationship with Roadbend other than as a satisfied client of their excellent services.
I would not be concerned at the mileage (we tend to use cars in Oz). I have done the east to west trip several times by car at 8,000 to 9,000Km per round trip. As such, our cars are used all year round, tend to be well maintained, and are often in better condition than those low mileage examples that are laid up for long periods. Next suggestion is to post in Aussie regional forums, and/or contact our go-to gurus . . . Clarke in QLD (series i), Jim in NSW (series II) and Grant in SA (all the Jags, incl V12s) by private message.
Best wishes, and keep us posted on outcome,
Ken
Aye at first, I sa WA as Washington state. but, the names n ot familiar. Teh right hand wheel gave me a clue.
With limited information if it were here, my rough value would be 5-7 USA $'s.
Nice car, but more flaws will pop up that need a fix.
MY 83 seems to have escaped the alleged low quality control??? Even it;s ill famed Thermo plastic paint looks quite decent. No cracking and chipping.. Takes a wax and polish very nicely...

Those pictures are really hard to determine the quality of the vehicle. Can't tell what is under those sheepskins, or under the hood, body lines. Really best if you could personally inspect the vehicle, but more revealing shots and possibly maintenance history would also work. For $9200 AU ( $7000 US) this vehicle should be clean andeverything in operable condition. Good luck :-)
