Not sure what the actual name is but its the square jaguar face that sits on the front of the body. Between the headlights above the grill. Not the hood emblem but the square jaguar face. 81 xj6 series 3

the one I use for my avatar? that is the Series 3 XJ-6 emblem with the "growler" face.

the chromed "leaping cat" is not called an emblem but a "mascot" or "ornament".

I see them on ebay sometimes or you might get them used.

yes, they all share a 12 volt common power source and grounds for the light bulbs, but each gauge or warning light has its own sender or sensor which is connected to its own source of power wherever it is located.

what problem does the car have with the gauges?

New alternator and volt regulator, but the battery warning light stays dim. Its been on for over a month. Turned on all accessories while running, revved the engine and the volts measured 13.9-14. First morning drive the volt gauge will go up alot when hitting about 45-50mph but never hits the red zone (looks at about 15v or 14.7ish). I was thinking maybe the gauge is bad or the warning light is bad. Battery is new to.

Odometer has not worked since i got the car

Speedometer works only when i accelerate, when i let off gas it bounces it goes to 0. I tried rotating it out as specified but i cant get the dang thing out. I feel the spring but it wont rotate.

Fuel gauge seems lazy and reads the proper amount after the car has been driven a little bit and is warmed a bit (5-10mins or so). It sits short by about 2-3 gallons when in the on position and cold.

Oil pressure gauge is fine. I have the checklist for the fuel tank senders.

you bought a new and correct battery for the car? the light stays on? then there is no question now that the problem is the alternator, and the only way you will confirm it, is by substituting the suspect alternator with another. You had to buy a new battery anyway, you had the wrong battery in the car. Now you need an alternator to confirm the issue. Get a used one.

The coolant gauge, when the engine is warmed up reads 90 Celsius or a tad over. Once i hit the road and drive it goes down a notch from 90 and never hits halfway again, not sure if this is concerning but something i just noticed.

looks normal to me, just like mine, it should cool down when you get on the highway, then rise when you get in traffic, the auxiliary fan should come on if the temp goes past a certain point.

why do you want to remove the speedo? to look at the back or to replace it? most likely it's not the speedo but the speed sender under the car. Doug knows where it is, I've never had to replace mine. Leave the gauge alone. Try to get a used speed sender to confirm.

that's the sign of a car that has been sitting for a long time and maybe the tank floats are corroded and lazy. Constant exercise will take care of it. Leave it alone. Put a bottle of STP Fuel System Cleaner in each tank and burn it off in a long interstate drive, at least 200 miles one way, then another 200 back. Tap on the glass of the fuel gauge with your index finger when you're driving and you usually can get the needle moving to where it should be, exercise the gauge, switch tanks every 20 to 25 miles, drive it like an aircraft, do not let one tank get too low before switching to the other, keep the wings balanced, use only 87 octane gasoline!

Ok thanks, I know the manual calls for 91 octane. Ive been using v power 93 from shell for the past month and haven't had any problems. Do you still suggest only to use 87? Where exactly is the sending unit located? Could I check it for connections? How would you fix the odometer to work again?

when you open the gas filler cap, is there a plate that says "USE ONLY 87 OCTANE" ?

have you downloaded the Factory Service Manual from the "XJ-6 / XJ-12 HOW TO QUICK LINKS" ??

the Factory Manual answers all your questions.

I have the manual and it sais recommended 91 octance. The gauge and filler cap only sais unleaded fuel only. I was confused because i thought all xj6's call for 91 octane.
