Default oil pump destruction

Some of you may have noticed from my other threads ive been having a few teething issues with my xj6 since getting it registered 3 weeks ago after 9 years off the road, well i finally got the sump off...reason being that on Saturday night the oil pressure went and the oil light came on, when i checked there was very little oil under the cam cover which lead to this.
Last week i replaced the head gasket and can only assume that the washer has fallen down over the timing chains, i dont know how or where it came from....

OUCH.

Still working out how it got thru the intake gauze??

I have found lots of strange things in sumps over the years, but never anything odd actaully inside that pick up filter.

Agree.... I have seen some weird stuff in the engines of critters I've taken apart. In about 1960 I bought a really rough 40 Ford pickup.
Old ranch truck. cheap as the engine, transmission and radiator were
missing. Screwed up brakes and a bent front axle!!! Crudely "straightened" right fenders/wings.

I got an engine core from the local junkyard cheap. It had a knock!!
But, slick, 53 mercury assembly. 254 CI, not the Ford 239. And three incomplete "busted" three on the floor transmissions. All were due to the iron man...

Way back then, the nut on the top of spark plugs could be unscrewed.
I found one in one cylinder. Busted a hole in a piston. I fixed it. new piston, rings, inserts and a valve job and it ran just dandy. Valve jobs not easy on those critters...

Could it be that the washer was in there all along and just a happenstance that it got picked up ?

Cuz, I too wonder how it got past the mesh????

At least you stopped before any real carnage occurred....
