Sump Tank Internal Coating?
Hello All,
In the process of replacing the main fuel tank in my '89.
I've also pulled the sump tank so I could clean it and have a look see inside.
Inside the sump tank, its not rusty but seems to be coated with some kind of thick material, some of which has come off in chunks.
Are these tanks supposed to be coated on the inside at all or bare steel?

No the sump tank should be clean steel inside. Either someone has coated it and the coating is falling off (very likely) or fuel residues have dried and had the same effect.
If you cannot get it clean, I suggest that you buy a second hand one from a breaker.

Thanks Greg!
I'll see if I can clean it before sourcing another one. The "coating" on the inside looks like burnt cheese, so maybe someone tried to coat it.
As an aside, the main tank has a radiator shop repair tag wired to it, indicating some work has been done. The inside of the main tank is nasty too, very similar to the sump.

Ah yes, I'd be willing to bet that's the stuff that was put into both tanks, Wisconsin cheese notwithstanding!
