Part name???
I was in my trunk yesterday tidying up some wiring connections and noticed that the metal trap under behind the back seat/under the back window was rusting pretty bad. I took the bolts out and discovered that it is in horrible condition. Hoses were clogged up so im assuming water found its way to this area. What is the name/purpose of this thing and what do you think I need to do to ensure that water stays out....also it had 4 square openings covered by thin pieces of flapping metal...what is purpose of the metal (covers) they almost remind me of a doggie door at the bottom of a real door.
I don't know the official name but I call it a "plenum". It's actually part of the ventilation system. Air exits the cabin into the plenum, to be exhausted into the boot via the flaps....which are one-way operation so air can't come in.
If the foam edging rots away from the flaps they'll make a "cow bell" noise when you close the doors :-)

Make sure you unclog the hoses. It is normal for water to get in there but it has to be able to drain. Do some rustproofing on the replacement part. Or you might be able to patch up the one you have if you take it out and have some new metal welded in to repair the rust.
i just took out my plenum all together and plugged up all the holes...just kept the drain hoses hooked to nothing in the trunk so air would get in...also plugged up all the exhaust holes on the trunk and rear seats...
