Default Puffy Sun Visors, what's the fix? XJ6 S1

So my 1973 Xj6 S1 has puffy sun visors. I guess the foam deteriorated leaving the vinyl covering free to puff out. Anybody know where to get era correct replacement visors? I imagine I could have an interior shop fix them. Or maybe I can slice them open and fix them. Anyway, they annoy me the way they are! I could try jaguar heaven, but I cant imagine that any of these visors have survived the 40 years intact. In fact, my interior is in awesome 9/10 shape, execpt for the visors (and the headliner which was recently replaced, and of course the headrests, but thats it!).

Thanks.

Seems like a trait of these beasts. Mine are that way and have been since 2001, when the car came to me. They don't bother me at all. the vinyl is still in excellent health and I kinda like the soft padded look and feel. Kinda like the pinned cushions in cars of old.

OTH, as you say, an owner in a desert clime had far worse units. A trip to his auto upholstery facility produced nice tight stitched units. very attractive.

In about the early eighties, the door panels in my 79 IHC Scout II got really bad looking. They were clad in really cheapo vinyl, more like the oil cloth found on early kitchen tables. I had already dumped the similarly clad and most uncomfortable bench seat in favor of a nice set of buckets from a Chrysler clad in Ricardo Montalban's Corinthian leather. Much better. I bought a nice roll of vinyl in a close color in a garage sale. I took it and the door cards to the local upholstery place. They made new cards and covered them neatly with my vinyl. An added row of decorative stitching made them seem regal.

Used ones are not likely to be any better.

Merely suggestions, as it is your car.

Carl

This sort of bugs me on my car, too. Can they be taken apart without pulling out the stitching?

Aren't they molded shut with no stitches? On the first jag we had with puffy visors, they leaked out the foam dust particles, very annoying. My current ones are still sealed, just puffy. I think I will just accept it for now and fix them when and if they start leaking dust.

Default Fix is easy - go back a couple of years to 1971

I put in the S3 sun visors and soon took them and threw them away. They look like Jaguar ran out of money and all they had left was plastic bags....

I had my original sun visors recovered (the old style card board ones) and have never looked back again....

Sorry for the poor picture but the sun was in the wrong place...

Is the mounting three hole triangle the same on later XJ's. Guess what I am asking is, did the Brits ever finally design a durable sun visor in later models that can just replace the crap used on S1,2,3 XJ's or do we just buy American sun visors, from just about anything, mount & forget them. It ain't rocket science ! BTW, I'm keeping the bag of brown dust that the foam had dissolved into.

I dunno about the mounting triangle but the Series III visors are not better than earlier versions. Even brand new they looked looked cheap and they don't hold up any better....although one wonders how many decades a visor is supposed to last. Sourcing good used ones is hit-n-miss

If you have time to scrounge for modern replacements that'll fit, that's probably your best bet. Maybe $10 each a the local self serve salvage yard? Having a local trim shop rebuild your old ones might get expensive. My local trim shop, which does nice work, is $80/hour

Cheers

I found a pair from a 1986 XJ-S V12 Coupé that are very similar, just slightly smaller in height, about 1/4" inch shorter, covered with a heavier vinyl than the XJ-6 ones and the inside form is a solid rubber material. Certainly not foam. They fit my XJ-6 fine in every way. Chromed mounting triangle is the same and they clip into existing clips.

I replaced mine with a pair from a Series 2, same size and same mounting pattern, works well.
Cheers,

Instead of replacing the visors, here is what I have done. Remove the two screws holding the visor. Use a razor blade to cut along the seam of the hinge side and on top at the clip to allow the internal wire support to be pulled out. You also may want to expose the screws holding the visor to the stem if loose. Dump out the powdered remains on the old foam first. Take two pieces of 1/2" foam and glue them together around the wire support and trim to shape. Slide the unit into the cover and sew up the end seam using a baseball stitch & nylon thread. Same for the small U shaped area at the clip. Apply a coat of black liquid rubber electrical insulator around the seams and reinstall. Damn sight better than paying $110 for a set of the same crap.
