I think I still have a can of "left over ignition switch" stuff, including a harness part. it might be what you need to fix what you have back to factory. Free, for the postage, should you so choose.
Seems the hard way home to me.
My NOS switch from David Boger at everydayxj was a much more direct and effective fix. A lot of things began to behave on the install.

1996 xj6 push button start
Your existing switch should have the follwing:
Heavy brown wire. This is 12v constant voltage supply
White wire. This goes to the coil, inertia switch, fuel injection, etc
White/pink wire. This goes to your accessories like wipers, radio, etc
White/yellow wire. This goes to the starter relay.
Run the brown wire to one terminal of your toggle switch and one terminal of your push-button switch.
Now take the white and white/pink wires and attach them to the other terminal of the toggle switch. Flip the toggle and you have "ignition"
Take the white/yellow wire and attach it to the other terminal of the push-button switch. Push the button and the starter should spin.
If desired you could use two toggle switches....one to power up the white wire circuits and another to power up the white/pink wire circuits. This would roughly approximate having "Ignition 1" and "ignition 2", as on your regular ignition switch
Cheers

Wires at the back of the ignition switch: red and white, white and orange, white and neutral, blue and red, black. I tried connecting them in every way I can think of and only get dash lights to come on.... is this even possible?

in the classic 1960's Jaguars there is a push button to start the engine, but you still need a key and ignition switch to activate the electrical power to the push button switch.
I have both for sale in my Classic S type parts website, from a 1966 Jaguar S type.
(push button for START, ignition switch with original Key to activate electrical power).
However, these parts in working condition don't come cheap, particularly if original equipment. Even modern reproductions are not cheap and I understand, not as reliable as the original Lucas builds.
I do not think it will work, since modern Jaguars have a combination electrical ignition switch - mechanical steering column Lock. But hey, you can try.
